High-quality rice currently is on an upward trend not only in the global market but also in Vietnam. The high-quality rice is now receiving a lot of attention and trust from consumers because of the safety and superior quality it brings forth. One of the high-quality rice products that must be mentioned is premium organic rice.
According to a research report published by QY Research in 2020, the total amount of global organic rice exports in 2018 reached $1.5 billion. This report also shows that the organic rice exports will increase by 9% from 2019 to 2025 with a forecasted growth of $2.78 billion in 2025.
In Vietnam, premium organic rice is being focused for development and has cemented its superior position in the consumers’ hearts and the ecosystem.
Organic rice farming area in Ca Mau
In 2020, more than 1,400 hectares of paddy field in the Mekong Delta provinces, consisting of Ca Mau, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, Kien Giang and Vinh Long were certified by the international organic standards of USDA, EU, and JAS. Ca Mau has the largest area of organic rice-shrimp in the region with ST24 and ST25 rice varieties. The organic rice produced from these breeds is in the top grade on the market due to its superior quality: long, clear, not chalky grain, the cooked rice is sticky, fragrant and keeping its deliciousness when it cools. The quality of rice is always guaranteed because it is grown in accordance with the rice-shrimp model and strictly adheres to the international organic standards.
In particular, Vietnamese ST25 rice was awarded the first prize at the World's Best Rice contest held in Manila - Philippines by The Rice Trader.
By concentrating on enhancing rice quality, applying the international organic rice standards to production and taking advantages of existing favorable conditions such as Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), the European-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) will definitely help Vietnam domestic rice raise its level and bring a new position to Vietnamese rice in the intercontinental market.
